Carnivore Restaurant: the meat lover’s paradise in Nairobi

We visited the famous Carnivore on our first day in Nairobi. The restaurant calls itself “Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience” and it has been nominated a few times among the best 50 restaurants in the world. I don’t know about that and my personal opinion is that it doesn’t belong there.

Nowadays, the choice of meat doesn’t include game meat which had been declared illegal. This is an attempt to drive down the market for game meat in a bid to reduce illegal poaching, so for anyone hopping to eat game, the most exotic meat you can taste is crocodile, ostrich and camel (they were out of, when we were there).

What you get is unlimited amounts of grilled beef, chicken, turkey, pork, sausage, lamb and the exotic trio above.

Every type of meat is roasted over a massive charcoal grill on giant skewers. The waiter brings the skewers to the table and carves out chunks of meat to your liking. Being an “all you can eat” type of place, you can order second rounds with the meat you liked best.

The buffet comes with a salad, soup, a variety of sauces for the meat, potatoes, choice of desserts and coffee. Make sure you get a dawa drink, especially if you like vodka.

I can’t say we were blown away by the experience. The meats were ok, nothing special. The ostrich meat-balls were really good.

I think that the restaurant has got a little “tourist trap” feel to it, and it’s a little overpriced.

We still had a good time, though.
